Organizing Meeting for Literacy Equity in LPS

  • January 21, 2024
  • 4:00 PM
  • RSVP: taylorcarrollsingh@gmail.com

Please join one of our upcoming organizing meetings to advocate for high quality literacy instruction and reading interventions in LPS.

Two of LPS' core GenEd ELA curricula (Units of Study/Teachers College Columbia Readers  & Writers Workshop by Lucy Calkins and Fountas & Pinnell were found to be of low quality, non-evidence based and are not approved by MA DESE.  More reviews here. Additionally, LPS' 1st grade intervention, Reading Recovery, was found to have a negative impact on children who received the intervention, as they did not make long term gains in their reading skills.

We need to advocate for high quality, evidence based curricula and interventions that teach structured literacy with direct explicit instruction in scope and sequence so that all children, especially children with disabilities in LPS can learn how to read. Consider making a statement during the January 23rd Community Speak at School Committee.  We need your voice and your passion!  If you don't want to speak publicly, but have a written statement, we can find someone to read this anonymously.

Please join us today, Sunday afternoon in person, or Monday evening:

  • In Person: Sunday, January 21, 4:00 - 5:30 PM

We will meet in-person in Lexington and socialize for the first 30 minutes, and then hold a brief one hour meeting. Wine, seltzer and cheese will be served!

  • Virtual:  Monday, January 22nd, 7:00 - 8:00PM

Please RSVP to: taylorcarrollsingh@gmail.com for the address and/or zoom link.

For those of you who can’t attend the organizing meeting, but want to speak at the Jan 23rd SC meeting, please email us for guidance on preparing your statement.
